roast whole suckling pig

if you believe that some cutsey little animal be sacrificed for the greater good (read: food), then click here.

if you are some animal rights activist or member of a certain, ahem, association, please exit.

as the name suggets, this is not the real thing. you have been warned. for your information, i have used Yeo’s laksa paste (185g). apprently this stuff is imported directly to england so i think you will not be able to find it in singapore. (would you need it anyway?)

for 1 person:

half a bottle of Yeo’s Laksa Paste, sufficient amount of bee hoon (thin variety), beansprouts, tau pok, fish cake and 1 hard boil egg per person

to prepare:

hard boil egg first, then prepare beansprouts. cut taupok into small pieces and slice fish cake. cook bee hoon according to manufacturer’s instructions. dissolve the laksa paste in 400ml (2 cupfuls) of water and boil, adding taupok and fishcake. boil for 10 minues, adding beansprouts in the last 5 minutes of cooking. remove from heat and add the bee hoon and hard boiled egg before serving.

optional: the paste is only mildly spicy, has a strong coconut flavour and is a little bland. if you can afford it, use a better quality paste or mix the Yeo’s Laksa with the better quality stuff if you’re strapped for cash.

laksa in england?

October 31, 2007

it’s possible! granted it’s not the real thing but when you’re 13 hours from home, anything that tastes, looks and smells like the real thing will suffice. i’ve been eating it two times for dinner but sadly run out of bee hoon. thankfully i’ve got spaghetti so just improvise. who knows, maybe i will bring the spaghetti laksa back to singapore and start a new food craze.

recipe for laksa: see pirated laksa (this recipe does not apply if you are already in singapore!)

guinness world record

October 30, 2007

if no record, i’m willing to be nominated.

October 30, 2007

should i go during the winter holidays? hopefully i can find some part time work to fund this trip cos i know it will be seriously expensive.

sea weekend

October 30, 2007

so lazy… (see previous post)

first sea weekend: portsmouth cruise to nowhere. imagine standing on deck, winds of 20km/h (?) and temperature of 10C. its a miracle i did not get frostbite. but the blood in my cheeks and nose were frozen and i got seasick. on the bright side, at least they pay you to go at £80 per trip! can’t “afford” to go every weekend coz of school work. did i forget to mention that the cook, Jamie, was a damn great guy? (Jamie = extraordinary great food and hospitality)

think i will go for the next trip, 9-11 november in poole if i’m free. but simply put, i need the money.

lazy…

October 30, 2007

getting lazier by the day. schoolwork does not get done, my room is in a mess and i’ve just run out of money. damn.

pasta a la wildboar

October 24, 2007

this recipe has no fixed ingredients, the list below is a guide. just use whatever you have at hand (or in the fridge!)

 for 1 person:

one cupful of dried pasta, 1/4 large capsicum, one small ripe tomato, 3 medium button mushroom, 1/4 large onion, and whatever meat you have. pasta sauce.

to prepare:

cook pasta until done, then drain and reserve. slice mushroom, dice all vegetables and meat. cook, add salt, pepper and herbs to taste. add pasta sauce and some water. cook well, then mix pasta and coat well. serve.

optional: if using very thin pasta sauce, add a little passata or good quality pasta sauce. add 1/4 teaspoon chilli powder if you like spicy pasta.

easy pork chop

October 24, 2007

make this when you need a quick fix of a classic british dish.

for 1 person:

two pork chop, 2 medium or 1 large potato, frozen garden peas

to prepare:

season pork chop with salt, pepper and dried herbs. boil potatoes until soft, then mash them, adding milk and butter. fry pork chops until done. meantime boil the peas until cooked. serve.

optional: fry some minced onion and mushroom while frying the pork chops. serve the onion and mushroom as a kind of ‘topping’

new CD

October 24, 2007

i’m a victim of impulse shopping

browsing through the CD section of the university bookstore, saw one eric clapton cd ( clapton chronicles the best of eric clapton), costs £7 and you know the rest is history.

i’m actually listening to it now and it’s not bad.

Reflections

October 13, 2007

excess baggage is dangerous. carrying too much and too long might kill you

busy, busy, busy…

October 13, 2007

enjoy yurself while you can

this week only got lecture, no tutorial so still can afford to “run around”. it’s as if my schedule ain’t packed enough. wake up at 7am, camping in the library since 9am, then go for classes. thursday got RN training from 1900 to 2100 at oxford, 45 mins from here. from what i have seen, shouldn’t be so bad. compared to SAF, this is like NCC standard. for now.

weekends are boring. got nothing to do so listen to radio. lucky got their version of Gold 90.5fm so that’s quite comforting. however, theirs is a lot better. everytime i turn on the radio, always got ‘sing-along’ session.

by the way, going to portsmouth next weekend on 19 to 21 october for RN sailing trip. should be fun but cold. winter hasn’t come yet so still ok. then 24 october gor trafalgar night dinner. next day training.

so damn busy.

sailing tomorrow!

October 10, 2007

ahoy there! new midshipman coming aboard.

have been confirmed entry and tomorrow is induction night into the RN. will definitely reach there after 1900hrs coz lessons end at 1800. (hopefully earlier as tomorrow first tutorial.) but anyway, good that i can join. got pay! but have not confirm.

so we shall see what will happen tomorrow. hopefully not so bad and just light lessons.

NS all over again…
